Brief Overview of Therapeutic Methods Used at
A “Kitchen Table” Approach to Counseling
No two people are alike. One treatment modality will not be
right for every person. This is why my overarching theoretical orientation is
client-centered and eclectic. This eclectic mix includes, but is not limited
to, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Reality Therapy, Rationale-Emotive Therapy,
and Analytical Psychotherapy. Sessions in our Loveland office are conducted in
a professional yet non-clinical, relaxed environment. I call this a “Kitchen
Table” approach to mental
health and well-being. Sessions are also conducted in the Miramont Family
Practice offices in Fort Collins.
Together we may talk and study your relationship and
behavior styles. You may be encouraged to vent your feelings in a variety of
healthy ways.
We may delve into your subconscious thought processes and
behaviors by deconstructing past and current behaviors or events in your life,
examining your sleep patterns, discussing your dreams, exploring your family
relationships, or by doing other activities which facilitate greater
understanding of the interpersonal and environmental dynamics occurring in your
home, at work and other places in which you operate on a regular basis.
We may work toward reframing unhealthy or negative thoughts.
We may explore the concept of understanding and taking personal responsibility
for one’s own behavior.
If you are dealing with overwhelm, disorganization or
impulse control we may work to improve your interpersonal relationship skills,
and create daily functioning routines that actually work for you.
Maybe there is an undesirable behavior you wish to
extinguish. Perhaps some thing or situation (or person) frightens you. Perhaps
there are addiction issues you or someone you know and care about needs to
explore, manage or end.
Maybe you have been traumatized by past or current events,
situations, or persons in your life or you have frightening and painful
memories from the past which need to be examined in order to go on living a
happy and healthy life.
Perhaps loss of health, dreams or a special relationship has
changed your present and expectations for your future. Maybe physical, or
behavioral health challenges exist in your life or in the life of a family
member; challenges such as AD/HD, asthma, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, breast
cancer, brain trauma…
Assertiveness training or managing anger may be things you wish to explore. Feelings of sadness may be keeping you from enjoying life. Frustration may be causing you to feel “crazy”.
We will work together to establish and accomplish your mental, emotional and behavioral goals so that
you can live your life and thrive!
